Bitcoin ETFs Take In 2.3bn Dollars in August as BTC Reclaims 79,000

Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds have had their best stretch of 2026, and the turn has a date on it.
The count
Reading the daily flow table and summing the sessions available gives net inflows of about 2,286 million dollars into US spot bitcoin ETFs for August.
That figure needs a caveat we would rather state than bury. The source table serves only a rolling window of roughly twenty rows. The earliest August session it returned to us was 7 August, and 3 to 6 August and 26 August were not present. Our total is therefore a floor for the month, not a complete tally. Where a publication reports a full-month figure, ask which rows it read.
Session by session, the shape is clear:
| Date | Bitcoin, US$m | Date | Bitcoin, US$m |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Aug | +101.7 | 18 Aug | +189.3 |
| 10 Aug | −144.6 | 19 Aug | +517.2 |
| 11 Aug | +7.8 | 20 Aug | +606.3 |
| 12 Aug | −61.1 | 21 Aug | +307.5 |
| 13 Aug | −131.1 | 24 Aug | +337.6 |
| 14 Aug | −56.2 | 25 Aug | +314.3 |
| 17 Aug | +297.5 |
Four of the five sessions from 10 to 14 August were negative. Every session from 17 August onward was positive, and the three largest — 19, 20 and 21 August — account for 1,431 million dollars between them, well over half the month.
Ether funds ran the same pattern on a smaller base: about 1,035 million dollars across the same readable sessions, also turning on 17 August, with 20 August the largest single day at plus 219.5 million.
What the price did
Bitcoin traded at 78,971.90 dollars on Kraken at 02:01 UTC on 27 August, inside a 24-hour range of 77,628.80 to 79,221.60.
For scale: on 2 August, exchange data put bitcoin at 63,158.80 dollars. That is a gain of roughly 25 per cent in under four weeks, and it lands after a first half of 2026 in which bitcoin fell from its October 2025 peak to a low near 58,000 dollars in June.
Ether stood at 2,502.17 dollars, XRP at 1.41207, solana at 101.64 and dogecoin at 0.087247.
The part worth being careful about
The order of events is not evidence of cause. Flows and price moved together in the second half of August, and it is equally consistent with the data that funds bought because price rose as that price rose because funds bought. Creations are real spot demand — the sponsor has to acquire the coin — but they remain a small share of daily spot volume.
What can be said without stretching: June 2026 was a month of heavy outflows, July was thin, and August reversed both. The macro backdrop did not soften to explain it. The Federal Reserve held its range at 3.5 to 3.75 per cent on 29 July with three dissents arguing for a hike, and July payrolls came in at minus 23,000 with unemployment at 4.1 per cent. Rate expectations did not do this on their own.
The next scheduled test is the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on 15 and 16 September, which carries a Summary of Economic Projections.

FAQ
How much did bitcoin ETFs take in during August 2026?+
Summing the daily rows we could read gives net inflows of about 2,286 million dollars. That figure covers 7 August and 10 to 25 August; rows for 3 to 6 August and for 26 August were not served by the source table, so it is a floor rather than a full month.
When did flows turn positive?+
On 17 August. The week of 10 to 14 August was negative on four of five sessions, with the worst at minus 144.6 million on 10 August. From 17 August every readable session was positive, peaking at plus 606.3 million on 20 August.
What is bitcoin trading at now?+
78,971.90 dollars on Kraken as of 27 August 2026, 02:01 UTC, within a 24-hour range of 77,628.80 to 79,221.60. The live figure is on our bitcoin price page.
Did ether ETFs follow the same pattern?+
Yes, on a smaller base. Ether funds took in about 1,035 million dollars across the same readable sessions, with the same turn on 17 August. Relative to fund size that is the stronger flow of the two.
Does an ETF inflow mean the price must rise?+
Not mechanically. Creations require the sponsor to buy spot bitcoin, which is real demand, but ETF flows are a fraction of total spot volume and they follow price as often as they lead it.
